Nationwide survey reveals significant increases in use of mind and body approaches. More adults and children are using yoga and meditation, seeing many of its benefits. Here's why:
Studies have shown that the brain's gamma-aminobutyric (GABA) levels spike after just a single hour of yoga. Higher GABA levels are associated with lower levels of depression and anxiety. Simply put, even a single class can start changing your brain chemistry and improving your mood.
Stress weakens the immune system. One of yoga's clearest benefits to the heart is its ability to relax the body and mind. Emotional stress can cause a cascade of physical effects. The deep breathing and mental focus of yoga and meditation can off set this stress, strengthening the immune system.
Yoga and meditation have been shown to improve memory in both adults and children, a benefit that goes hand-in-hand with academic performance. As stress is often a major obstacle to academic achievement, yoga's stress relief powers boost student performance.
Growing up, my community did not have access to wellness centers and therapists. Working as an Educator, one of the things I noticed missing from the curricula was mindfulness education. I am changing that narrative by offering services to provide holistic solutions for our youth and individuals who are committed to evolving through mindfulness. The next generation deserves to know what wellness feels like.
